About Utility Options

Publicly owned utilities, especially small municipalities and rural electric cooperatives, face new options, challenges, and opportunities in a fast-changing electric industry environment.

The Utility Options for a Competitive Edge database provides examples of what other public power entities are doing to:

  • Retain existing customers and win new customers
  • Diversify and market their services
  • Deliver their services more efficiently and cost-effectively

Programs and projects listed in the database originate from all types, sizes, resource levels and geographic locations of utilities. Information in the database comes from user input and regular searches of current utility industry news and publications. Utilities are encouraged to contribute to the database once information is no longer proprietary.

Utility Options for a Competitive Edge is sponsored by the Western Area Power Administration. Utility programs in the database are not limited to these regions, however. Other public power entities from across the U.S. are encouraged to become sponsors. For further information, contact at (720) 962-7419.
